Site Safety & Health Officer

About the position

We are hiring an experienced Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) to support a high-visibility federal project at the Department of Veterans Affairs' Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta, Maine. This position is a critical role in maintaining a safe and compliant jobsite during the execution of structural concrete repair work. The selected candidate will be the designated SSHO for the Prime Contractor and will be responsible for the full implementation and management of safety and health protocols on site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the lead safety official on site, ensuring all activities comply with OSHA standards and other applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations
  • Implement and maintain a comprehensive site-specific APP.
  • Conduct daily safety inspections, hazard analysis, and toolbox talks with all site personnel
  • Enforce compliance with safety protocols and address unsafe behaviors or conditions immediately
  • Oversee the management of safety documentation, including SDS, incident logs, near-miss reports, and corrective actions
  • Serve as the liaison between the Prime Contractor, government representatives, subcontractors, and workers regarding all safety matters
  • Monitor work activities related to structural concrete to ensure safe practices are followed at all times
  • Lead incident investigations, prepare detailed reports, and recommend corrective actions
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety training records and certifications for all workers

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of the OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Course
  • One of the following:
    • At least 5 years of full-time construction industry safety experience,
    • OR at least 3 years of experience with a valid CSP or CSHT certification
    • OR a degree in Occupational Safety and Health (or related field) from an accredited university or college
  • Demonstrated experience managing site safety on active construction projects
  • Familiarity with 29 CFR 1926 and federal construction safety standards
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage safety responsibilities for the duration of the project

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting safety efforts on federal government construction projects
  • Familiarity with VA project protocols and documentation standards
  • Experience with structural concrete repair work and its related safety considerations

Compensation:
Competitive hourly rate of $35 - $45/hr, based on experience and certifications.
