About the position

UNDERWRITING MANAGER Brief Description and Purpose of the Position The Underwriting Manager oversees and leads the underwriting operations for both life and non-life insurance lines. This role ensures that risk assessments and insurance decisions align with company standards, regulatory requirements, and business goals. The Underwriting Manager also supports product development, pricing strategies, and collaborates across departments to enhance underwriting efficiency and profitability. Competencies Underwriting Operations Management Supervise life and non-life underwriting teams in evaluating insurance applications. Review and approve complex cases and underwriter decisions. Establish underwriting guidelines, workflows, and benchmarks. Risk Assessment & Policy Decisions Oversee the assessment of financial, medical, and background information to determine risk. Ensure accurate, consistent application of risk models and rating tools. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry risk trends and standards. Product Development & Pricing Collaborate with product development and actuarial teams to design competitive and compliant insurance products. Provide insights and analysis for product pricing and reinsurance negotiations. Compliance and Documentation Ensure all underwriting practices adhere to internal policies and external regulations. Audit underwriting files and records for quality and accuracy. Maintain proper documentation and reporting to meet audit requirements. Team Leadership and Development Train and mentor junior underwriters and underwriting staff. Drive performance and accountability through clear KPIs. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and learning. Stakeholder & Partner Coordination Liaise with insurance partners and reinsurers on underwriting matters. Coordinate with sales, claims, IT, and support units to streamline underwriting-related processes. Analyze and compare insurer quotations; recommend optimal solutions. Education Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, or related field (Masters degree or relevant certifications preferred) Experience Minimum of 5 years experience in life and/or non-life insurance underwriting, with at least 2 years in a leadership or managerial role. Strong proficiency in underwriting and risk assessment software. Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite and data analysis tools. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Confident decision-maker with proven numeracy and statistical analysis capabilities.
