An established engineering and design-build organization is seeking an experienced Structural Engineering Department Manager to lead complex industrial projects and guide a team of structural professionals. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a licensed Structural Engineer who is motivated to mentor others, shape departmental strategy, and ensure technical excellence across industrial facilities.

This is not a civil engineering role. Only candidates with industrial structural engineering experience will be considered.

Position Overview: Structural Engineering Department Manager

The Structural Engineering Department Manager serves as both a technical leader and people manager. This role functions as the senior structural engineer on multidisciplinary industrial projects while overseeing departmental operations, staff development, and quality control.

The position plays a highly visible role within the organization, supporting operational performance, mentoring engineering staff, and ensuring consistent delivery of high-quality structural solutions for industrial clients.

The organizations work focuses exclusively on industrial facilities, including manufacturing, chemical, petrochemical, polymer, and process-based environments. Residential, commercial, and retail structural engineering are not performed.

This is a hybrid role requiring regular in-office presence (minimum three days per week). Fully remote arrangements are not available.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and allocate structural engineering resources to support project execution
  • Lead, mentor, train, and evaluate structural engineering staff
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and long-term department development
  • Establish and maintain department standards, procedures, and workflows
  • Serve as Lead Structural Engineer on multidisciplinary industrial projects
  • Review and approve structural designs, calculations, models, and drawings
  • Provide expert structural design for steel, concrete, masonry, and foundations
  • Resolve complex engineering, constructability, and field-related challenges
  • Review contractor bids and prepare bid evaluations
  • Perform site visits, field measurements, and construction support activities
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, internal standards, and client requirements
  • Collaborate with internal disciplines, clients, contractors, and external partners
  • Promote safe work practices and maintain a strong safety-focused mindset

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license with authority to seal documents
  • Minimum 10 years of consulting experience or 15+ years in structural department roles
  • Extensive industrial structural engineering experience
  • Demonstrated experience leading or managing structural teams
  • Strong knowledge of applicable structural design codes and standards
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, STAAD, STAAD Foundation, and Bluebeam
  • Ability to perform field observations, including working at heights
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Authorization to work in the United States
  • Ability to commute to the office on a hybrid schedule

Preferred

  • Experience with Revit, Navisworks, Tekla Tedds, RAM Elements, Hilti PROFIS, or similar tools
  • Basic surveying experience
  • Familiarity with laser scanning and point-cloud workflows
  • Limited stormwater or sewer design experience for small in-plant systems
